TROY, N.Y. (2/20/10) -- The Princeton men's hockey team weathered a fast start by Rensselaer and turn it on in the second period in defeating the Engineers 7-0 on Saturday night at the Houston Field House.
The game was the Big Red Freakout at RPI and the Engineers fed off of their capacity crowd in the first period as they fired 20 shots on the Princeton goal. RPI drew five Princeton penalties in the period, including two long five-on-threes, but the Tiger penalty kill stood strong on all five attempts and Zane Kalemba was equally impressive, stopping all 20 shots he faced.
Conversely the Tigers took advantage of their power-play chances in the opening period and Taylor Fedun put the Tigers on top when his shot found the back of the Engineer net at 14:20 off an assist from Jody Pederson.
Princeton was outshot 20-12 in the opening period, but built off its lead in the second period, scoring three goals and outshooting RPI 12-7 in the stanza. Princeton made it 2-0 by taking advantage of a bad RPI bounce 3:30 into the period when Matt Arhontas' centering pass bounced off an Enginner player in front and wound up on the stick of Mark Magnowski, who deposited it into the net for his sixth goal of the season.
Princeton then doubled its lead with goals two minutes apart at 12:41 and 14:58 of the period. First the Tigers took advantage of the stickhandling abilities of RPI netminder Bryce Merriam as Magnowski took the puck from him and fed Marc Hagel for a wide-open net as Merriam was still out of position behind the goal. Hagel's goal was his fourth of the season.
Minutes later, it was Brodie Zuk scoring his first collegiate goal, collecting a pass from Rob Kleebaum and putting it over the shoulder of Merriam to give Princeton a 4-0 lead. Will MacDonald also had an assist on the goal and Kleebaum's assist was his first collegiate point.
MacDonald made it a two-point night 3:50 into the third period when he knocked down a clearing attempt along the wall and then beat the defender to the goal and put a shot through the five-hole of Merriam for his second goal of the season and his first multi-point game.
Derrick Pallis and MacDonald finished off the scoring with two late goals. Pallis scored on a point shot that was deflected off an Engineer defender following a pass from Fedun, and MacDonald added his second of the period with an assist from Zuk.
Kalemba made 41 saves for his second shutout of the season. The Engineers outshot Princeton 41-32.
Princeton improved to 11-13-3 overall and 7-11-2 in the ECAC. The win also snapped a three-game winless streak for the Tigers. Princeton is back in action next Friday night when it hosts Yale at 7 p.m.
