Women's Water Polo Caps Opening Weekend With Win Over Brown

PRINCETON (2/21/10) - The 20th-ranked Princeton women's water polo team completed a three-win weekend by topping 18th-ranked Brown 13-11 on Sunday afternoon in the final day of competition at the Princeton Invitational held at DeNunzio Pool.
The Tigers jumped on top by countering for three goals in the opening period, while holding Brown off the scoreboard. Princeton built its lead to as many as five goals at the end of the third quarter before Brown closed the gap over the final eight minutes.
Princeton reached double figures for the fourth time in as many games this season as seven Tigers found the back of the net. Phoebe Champion and Helen Meigs led the way with three goals each, while Cari Levine and Brittany Zwirner scored two goals apiece.
Princeton was four of seven with the player advantage in the game as Levine, Champion, Zwirner and Carolina Ardila scored extra-player goals. Princeton killed eight of the nine man-advantage chances against it.
Kristen Ward made 10 saves in the win to earn her second win of the weekend.
Princeton improved to 3-1 with the win after defeating Gannon, Colorado State and Brown in its opening weekend. Princeton's lone loss was a three-goal defeat at the hands of fifth-ranked Michigan.
Princeton returns to action next weekend when the ECAC Championships are held at DeNunzio Pool. The Tigers open the tournament against Iona on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
