Women's Basketball Returns Home to Host Cornell/Columbia This Weekend

PRINCETON, N.J. (2/24/10) - The Princeton women's basketball team has just five games remaining on its regular season schedule and after a two-week hiatus will return to Jadwin Gym this weekend. The Tigers host Cornell on Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m., and Columbia on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m.
The games will be webstreamed live on GoPrincetonTigers.tv for subscribers. Fans can also listen to the play-by-play called by Princeton's Derek Jones online and follow live stats, free of charge.
Saturday's game with Columbia will be held in conjunction with Princeton's 11th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day. For more information on the event click on the link above.
Princeton is 21-2 overall and 9-0 in the Ivy League entering this weekend and sits alone at the top of the Ivy League standings. The Tigers average 70.8 points and hold opponents to 51.3 points per game for a +19.6 scoring margin. Overall Princeton is shooting 44.8 percent from the floor, 37.2 from long range and 69.4 from the free throw line.
Freshman Niveen Rasheed leads the team in both scoring and rebounding with 15.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. She is also the team leader in steals with 53 and assists with 71. Junior Addie Micir adds 12.9 points per game and has the best free throw and three point percentages on that team at 84.1 and 42.7, respectively. Sophomore Lauren Edwards is contributing 12.3 points per game, 4.3 rebounds and ranks in the top three on the team in steals (29), assists (52) and blocks (26). Classmate Devona Allgood has a team-high 34 blocks while pulling down 7.9 rebounds and scoring 10.7 points per game.
Princeton is 39-20 in the all-time series with Cornell and defeated the team 72-49 two weeks ago in Ithaca. The Tigers won both games last season, 75-56 on the road and 76-55 at home. When playing in Princeton, the Tigers are 23-7.
Cornell is 6-17 overall and 1-9 in the Ivy League to sit in seventh place in the league standings. The Big Red nearly knocked off Dartmouth last weekend, losing by just three points. The team has hit a rough patch lately going 1-14 in its last 15 games. Cornell averages 58.0 points while its opponents score 69.2 per game. The Big Red hit 36.5 percent of their shots, 66.8 percent of their free throws and 35.5 percent of its three-pointers. Allie Fedorowicz leads the team in scoring with 11.9 points per game, while Allie Munson is the team leader in rebounding with 5.4 boards per game. Lauren Benson has a team-best 134 assists and 24 steals. Fedorowicz also has 24 steals, while Munson has a team-high 13 blocks. Virginia McMunigal and Clare Fitzpatrick score 9.1 and 9.0 points per game, with Benson chipping in 7.3.
Princeton holds a 35-16 advantage in the all-time series with Columbia and posted a 77-55 win over the Lions two weeks ago. The Tigers swept the series last year, 69-59 on the road and 68-63 at Jadwin Gym. Prior to that the Lions won three straight games. When playing at home Princeton is 17-9.
Columbia enters the weekend with a 15-9 overall record and is 6-4 in the Ivy League to sit in third place in the standings along with Yale. The Lions defeated Dartmouth in overtime 66-59 and lost to Harvard by just two points last weekend. Columbia has a +4.2 scoring margin over its opponents, scoring 66 points to 61.8 by its opponents. The team shoots 40.7 percent overall, 67 percent from the line and 33.9 percent from behind the arc. Judie Lomax leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 18.6 points and 13.8 rebounds pe game. She leads the nation in double-doubles, and has a team-high 59 steals. Danielle Browne is the team's assist leader, dishing out 103 assists, while Lauren Dwyer has blocked 42 shots. Kathleen Barry, who did not play in the previous game with Princeton, averages 11.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game and has 40 steals and 13 blocks. Dwyer is putting up 10.6 points and 4.6 rebounds. Melissa Shafer and Browne add 7.3 and 6.0 points per game.
