Men's Swim/Dive Looks To Extend DeNunzio Streak Vs. Talented Navy Squad
February 03, 2010 | Men's Swimming and Diving
Following its impressive showing against both Harvard and Yale last weekend, the Princeton men's swimming and diving team will welcome yet another strong Eastern program to DeNunzio Pool this weekend in the Navy Midshipmen.
Princeton improved to 6-0 last weekend with victories of 203-150 over Harvard and 242-106 over Yale. All six of the Tigers' victories have come in the Ivy League, but they will move out of league Saturday to take on its rival in the former EISL. Navy heads into the weekend with a 12-1 record and will take on Columbia Friday before heading to DeNunzio Pool for the 1 p.m. start on Saturday.
The recent history of the Princeton-Navy one has included some close dual meets. Last season, in Annapolis, the 21st-ranked Princeton squad needed wins in both relays to hold off a tough Midshipmen team 155.5-144.5. Sophomore Matt Jacobson was among the individual winners for the Tigers, who went on to complete an undefeated season. In 2006, Navy had its way in Annapolis with a 165-135 dual victory, but Princeton came back to win the EISL title.
Princeton, which has a 20-year win streak inside the friendly confines of DeNunzio Pool, will be building on the strong results of HYP. Sophomore Jon Christensen, who ranks in the NCAA Top 30 in both the 100 breast (25th, 55.14) and 200 breast (27th, 1:59.89), won three events for Princeton, while a handful of swimmers added victories of their own. Senior diver Daniel Dickerson added a win in the one-meter competition and will have an interesting matchup with Navy's Ben Nicholas, the Patriot League Men's Diver of the Week.
