Edwards and Rasheed Earn Ivy Honors in Women's Basketball

PRINCETON, N.J. (3/1/10) - Princeton sophomore Lauren Edwards and freshman Niveen Rasheed have been named the Ivy League Player and co-Rookie of the Week in women's basketball it was announced by the league office on Monday, March 1.
Edwards was the key to keeping Princeton undefeated in the Ivy League with wins over Cornell and Columbia. Edwards led the Tigers with 37 points scoring in double digits in both games. She shot 17 for 28 from the field for 60.7 percent and was 3 for 8 from the three-point line. She averaged 18.5 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game. Edwards also had five assists, four blocks and four steals with just two turnovers in 57 minutes.
Despite playing just 18 minutes against Cornell, Edwards was a dominating force in helping the Tigers gain a substantial lead. She scored 14 points on 6 for 10 shooting, and hit two three-pointers. Edwards added three rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal. She was named the Player of the Game after leading Princeton with 23 points in a win over Columbia the following day. Her 23 points matches a season-best, as she shot 11 for 18. She was 2 for 5 from long range and added six rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals.
Rasheed averaged a double-double as Princeton remained undefeated in Ivy League play with wins over Cornell and Columbia. She scored 26 points and 20 rebounds, averaging 13 points and 10 rebounds per game. She added four assists and four steals. Overall she shot 9 for 20 from the field and was 8 for 8 from the free throw line.On Friday Rasheed was 6 for 9 from the floor and 6 for 6 from the free throw line to give Princeton 18 points and a substantial lead over Cornell before the starters were pulled from the game. She scored those 18 points in just 21 minutes, and added seven rebounds, three assists and one steal. Princeton saw itself trailing Columbia on Saturday and Rasheed was key to helping the Tigers rebound for the 12-point win. She led all Tigers in rebounds with 13 and scored eight points while earning three steals and one assist.
Rasheed shares the honor with Harvard's Victoria Lippert.
This is Rasheed's eighth Rookie of the Week honor and ninth weekly honor this season, while Edwards picks up her first honor of 2009-10.
