Baseball Team Opens Spring Break Trip at UNC Greensboro
March 12, 2010 | Baseball
Princeton opened the season a weekend ago with four games in a three-day span. Princeton dropped all four games, the closest coming in its opener, a one-run loss in 11 innings against Radford. Princeton then fell to Elon twice and Bucknell once in the remainder of the Elon Invitational.
The games represented Princeton's first time outdoors this spring. A total of 12 pitchers appeared over the weekend with two pitching in more than one game. Also 13 players played in the field and got an at-bat over the course of the four games.
Sam Mulroy led the Tigers offense batting .462 in three games with two home runs and three RBIs, while Brian Berkowitz hit .400 in the four games with three extra-base hits. Tom Boggiano, Brandon Englert and Andrew Whitener also hit over .300 in the season-opening weekend.
Princeton will open the weeklong trip this weekend at UNC Greensboro with games on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Princeton and UNCG have played regularly over the past five years, meeting each year since 2006. Princeton is 1-7 in those games, winning once in the 2007 season. Last season the teams had three scheduled games, but rain limited the series to a single game.
UNCG is 7-4 this season and enters the weekend with one win in its last four outings, a 10-5 win over Army last Sunday. The Spartans dropped a midweek game to Eastern Kentucky and had previously fallen in the first two games of the Army series. UNCG also has wins over Cleveland State (3) and Albany (3).
Princeton will continue its trip on Tuesday and Wednesday at 11th-ranked North Carolina. Then head to North Carolina A&T on Thursday before wrapping the week up at Navy.
