Baseball Readies for Midweek Games at UNC and NC A&T
March 16, 2010 | Baseball
Princeton enters the series off its first win of the 2010 season on Monday night in 12 innings at UNC Greensboro. Princeton earned one win in a three-game series with the Spartans, but all three games were decided by a single run with UNCG taking the first two.
Princeton got in the win column on Monday behind a stellar pitching effort from freshman Matt Bowman, who tossed seven no-hit innings of relief to earn the win. He also delivered the game-winning hit at the plate in the top of the 12th inning and has three-straight multi-hit games.
Sam Mulroy and Bowman are Princeton's only two hitters currently batting above .300 and they sit a thousandth of a percentage point apart at .346 and .345 respectively. Bowman has a team-high 10 hits while Mulroy leads the team with eight runs scored. Mulroy is also tied with Jon Broscious with two home runs. Broscious leads all Tigers with seven RBIs.
Princeton is 9-25 all-time against the Tar Heels and has played in Chapel Hill in six of the last eight seasons. UNC has taken the last 11 games between the schools dating back to a Princeton win in the 2003 season.
The Tar Heels are currently 12-4 overall and enter the two-game series off of back-to-back losses at Duke. UNC was ranked prior in the Top 20 prior to its weekend set against the Blue Devils but dropped to 24th in the latest poll. UNC had defeated St. John's and taken the opener from Duke prior to the two losses at Duke. The Tar Heels had lost just once in the first 11 games of the season.
Princeton will head back to Greensboro on Thursday to face North Carolina A&T in a single game. Princeton is 2-1 all-time against the Aggies, winning 18-7 last season. The Aggies are 5-8 overall after taking two games from North Carolina Central over the weekend. NCAT hosts High Point and Radford before Thursday's game with the Tigers.
Princeton will continue its trip over the weekend with a four-game series at Navy, beginning with a single game on Friday afternoon.
