Softball to Close Spring Trip at Stanford
March 18, 2010 | Softball
PRINCETON -- Closing its nine-day, 13-game run in California, the Princeton softball team (3-10) will play five games at Stanford's tournament with two against Santa Clara and one each against Cal Poly, Saint Mary's and the host Cardinal.
So far on the trip, Princeton has played twinbills against Santa Clara, San Jose State and Pacific as well as one game each against Colorado State in Fresno and Fresno State. Princeton is 2-6 so far in the Golden State with wins over Santa Clara and Pacific.
Friday will put Princeton against Saint Mary's (11-8) at 1:30 p.m. Pacific time with the first Santa Clara (5-9) game to follow. Saturday, Princeton will meet Cal Poly (8-8) at 12:15 p.m. Pacific with No. 10 Stanford (15-3) following. Sunday, Princeton will close the week with a 9 a.m. game against Santa Clara.
Princeton has faced all three teams in recent seasons. The Tigers are 1-3 all-time against Stanford, 0-1 against Cal Poly, 3-2 when facing Saint Mary's and 1-4 against Santa Clara including last weekend's doubleheader. All 15 of those contests have taken place since 2005.
The Tigers have two regulars hitting better than .300, with sophomore Nicole Ontiveros at .326 and senior Jamie Lettire at .351. Lettire paces Princeton with four of the team's 11 home runs, giving her 33 for her career. That total is good for second on the all-time Princeton list behind only Melissa Finley '05 (37). Also nearing the 30-home-run club is senior Kelsey Quist, who has belted three this year for a total of 29.
Princeton has been gaining experience in the circle, with a pair of freshman pitchers, Alex Peyton and Liza Kuhn, accounting for Princeton's three wins while throwing 46 of the 80 innings and Lettire shouldering the rest.
Following the spring trip, Princeton will open the home schedule next weekend against Rutgers and Lafayette at Class of 1895 Field.
