Rutgers Ruins Women's Lacrosse Home Opener in 12-11 Upset

PRINCETON, N.J. (3/3/10) - A goal by Marlena Welsh was the deciding goal as the Rutgers women's lacrosse team upset No. 9 Princeton 12-11 on Wednesday, March 3 at Princeton Stadium.
The Scarlet Knight scored five goals in the final 14 minutes to come back from a three-goal deficit to earn the win. Down 10-7 Rutgers scored two goals in 38 seconds to get within one and added another a minute later to even the game at 10-10 with 12:17 to play.
Freshman Caroline Rehfuss converted on a free-position attempt to regain the lead for Princeton at 8:51 but Brooke Cantwell evened the game with a free-position goal herself at 4:43. With 2:04 remaining Welsh scored the game-winning goal. The Tigers would win the next draw control but with 1:23 to go suffered a turnover and couldn't regain possession before time expired.
Senior Jenna Washabugh opened the game with a goal at 25:31 before the Scarlet Knights went on a 5-0 run to take a 5-1 lead a little more than midway through the first half.
Freshman Charlotte Davis scored on a free-position attempt and sophomore Barb Previ found Lizzy Drumm open out front to cut the Tigers' deficit to 5-3. Brittany Davis added another for Rutgers with 23 seconds to play for the 6-3 halftime score.
The Tigers came out in the second half and scored two quick goals by Rehfuss and junior Lizzy Drumm before Kristen Anderson responded for Rutgers to make it 7-5 at 24:22.
Princeton answered back with a 5-0 goal that would give them the 10-7 lead. The Tigers scored their first four goals in 2:20 by four different goal scorers and Rehfuss would scored her third of the night at 15:05.
Rehfuss led Princeton with four goals, while Drumm had three goals and one assist. Seniors Kristin Morrison and Washabaugh each had three-point efforts and sophomore Barb Previ picked up two assists.
Leading the way offensively for Rutgers was Kristin Anderson who had a five-goal game. Annie McGinley had one goal and two assists. Mary Cryan, Meghan Flanagan and Cantwell all contributed two points.
Junior Erin Tochihara had 12 saves in net for Princeton and on the other end of the field, Lily Kalata made 12 stops for Rutgers.
Princeton held a slim 30-27 edge in shots and dominated the center circle, winning 16 of 25 draw controls. The Scarlet Knights won the ground ball battle 19-16.
Princeton drops to 1-1 on the season, while Rutgers improves to 3-0 overall having beaten two ranked teams.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, March 6 when they host No. 6 Duke at 1 p.m.
