Sixth-Ranked Duke Tops #7 Women's Lacrosse At Princeton Stadium
March 06, 2010 | Women's Lacrosse
The seventh goal of the season by Princeton's Lizzy Drumm got the seventh-ranked Princeton women's lacrosse team to within two goals of the sixth-ranked Duke Blue Devils Saturday afternoon on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium. Unfortunately, it would be the closest Princeton would get, as Duke scored seven unanswered goals to complete a 13-6 win over the host Tigers.
The loss is the second-straight for the young Tigers, who fell to 1-2 on the season. Duke, coming off its first loss of the season to No. 2 Maryland, improved to 5-1 overall.
Duke held edges in shots (30-15), ground balls (25-18) and draw controls (12-9), but the feisty Tigers stayed close in a high-scoring first half. The Blue Devils jumped out first with a pair of goals in the span of 1:26, but Princeton's Kristin Morrison got the Tigers right back with her sixth and seventh goals of the season. Drumm's assist on Morrison's second goal, which came with 20:31 remaining in the first half, got Princeton back even.
Duke never let Princeton take the lead during the sunny Saturday afternoon contest. A goal by Morgan Miller, followed by the 17th goal of the season by Sarah Bullard, gave the Blue Devils another two-goal lead. Drumm provided another assist, this time to Charlotte Davis, to get Princeton back within one, but the Blue Devils once again battled back with two more goals.
With 13:28 remaining in the first half, Drumm scored her seventh goal of the season to get Princeton back within two goals. That would be the point when Duke turned it on; the 11th goal of the season by Christie Kaester started the 7-0 run that put the game out of reach. Princeton scored the final two goals of the game, including the first of the season by Jackie Klauberg.
Princeton will start its Ivy League season next weekend at Brown.
