Baseball Opens Season This Weekend at Elon Invitational
March 04, 2010 | Baseball
PRINCETON (3/4/10) - The 2010 Princeton baseball season opens this weekend at Elon Invitational, hosted at Elon's Latham Park and also featuring Radford and Bucknell in addition to the host Phoenix. Princeton will play three games in four days at the tournament.
The games will mark Princeton's first work outdoors this season as Princeton's Clarke Field still remains covered with snow. The forecast for North Carolina this weekend calls for sun and temperatures in the mid-50s.
Princeton will travel to North Carolina on Thursday and take on Radford Friday night in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The Tigers will then play a doubleheader against Elon on Saturday and a single game against Bucknell on Sunday. Princeton and Elon have faced each other regularly through the 2000s, last meeting to open the 2007 season. Elon won two of three games in that series but Princeton is 6-3 all-time against the Phoenix. The Tigers also hold a 7-1 series edge over Bucknell, but have not the Bison since the 1991 season.
An experienced group of pitchers will take the mound over the weekend for the Tigers as junior Dan Barnes (Career 2-5, 4.89 ERA), junior David Palms (7-4, 3.12 ERA) and senior Langford Stuber (6-7, 5.42 ERA) will get starts. Freshman Matt Bowman will start the fourth game.
Offensively and defensively the Tigers will run out a less experienced lineup, with senior first baseman Jon Broscious (Career .262, 12 HR), junior third baseman Matt Connor (.239, 1 HR), and senior outfielder Brian Berkowitz (.275, 5 HR), the only returning starters from a season ago.
Although this is the opening weekend for the Tigers, the three other teams have two weekends of action under their belts. Radford is 1-5 with a win over St. Joseph's and losses to the College of Charleston (3), Marshall and The Citadel. Elon is 4-3 overall with wins over Towson, Ohio, North Carolina A&T and High Point, and losses to Rice, Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Nebraska. Bucknell is 3-4 with all three wins coming over Old Dominion and losses to VMI (3) and Old Dominion.
