Yale Sweeps Softball to Close Ivy North Play
April 11, 2010 | Softball
Princeton (7-25, 1-7 Ivy) will start divisional play next weekend with four games at Columbia before returning home April 24-25 against Penn.
Game 1: Yale 11, Princeton 2 (5 inn.)
Princeton led early after getting two runs in the top of the first, but Yale roared back with six in the bottom half of the inning on the way to an 11-2, five-inning win in the opener.
All five hits and both runs allowed by Yale (8-17, 4-4) pitcher Holly Gutterud came in that first inning before settling in and keeping the Tigers quiet the rest of the way. The Bulldogs added five more runs in their last three at-bats against Princeton senior Jamie Lettire to invoke the run rule.
Game 2: Yale 8, Princeton 6
Yale swept the twinbill by breaking a tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth against Princeton freshman Liza Kuhn in an 8-6 victory.
Princeton again led in the second game with a pair of first-inning runs, this time coming off the bat of Kelsey Quist with a two-run home run, her fifth of the season.
Yale answered with a total of six runs between the second and fourth innings to take a 6-2 lead, but Princeton mounted a comeback in the top of the fifth. Sending 10 batters to the plate, Princeton got a sacrifice fly RBI from Jamie Lettire, RBI-singles from Alex Peyton and Lizzy Pierce, and a bases-loaded walk from Sarah Rounsifer to pull even.
But the tie lasted just an inning, as Yale's Allie Canulli broke through with a two-run single for the game's final runs before Bulldog pitcher Jackie Manzer survived a bases-loaded situation for the Tigers in the top of the seventh.
