Non-League Game vs. Monmouth Up Next for Baseball Team
April 12, 2010 | Baseball
Princeton enters the game off its best offensive weekend of the season, in which it batted .316 as a team and had 18 extra-base hits. The only problem for the Tigers though was that its opponents bats came alive as well, batting .385 in the four games played at Brown and Yale.
Five Tigers hit .300 or better on the weekend, led by Sam Mulroy, who hit .588 in the four games with 10 hits, seven of which went for extra bases. He also scored seven runs and drove in eight to lead the Tigers in all offensive categories. John Mishu batted .467 with seven hits and six RBIs. Brian Berkowitz also hit above. 400, while Jon Broscious and Noel Gonzales-Luna batted .333 for the series.
Princeton hit a total of five home runs in the four games with Nate Baird belting the first two of his college career. Mulroy, Mishu and Broscious added homers as well, with Broscious notching his 19th career long ball, which now ranks him tied for fifth all-time at Princeton.
The Tigers were swept in a doubleheader at Brown on Saturday and split a doubleheader on Sunday at Yale to finish the Gehrig-Rolfe Ivy crossover weekends with a 3-5 record. That puts the Tigers three games behind first-place Columbia, which sits at 6-2. Princeton's next league games come this weekend at Columbia, but before that series, the Tigers will host Monmouth on Tuesday afternoon at Clarke Field.
Princeton is 18-12 all-time against Monmouth and 11-4 in the series at home. The teams have played each other at least once in each of the last 13 seasons, with Monmouth currently on a five-game win streak. The Hawks topped Princeton 12-3 last season.
Monmouth is currently 10-14 overall and 6-6 in the NEC. The Hawks enter Tuesday's game having taken three of four games from Mount St. Mary's last weekend in NEC play. Monmouth won the first three games of the series before the Mount took the fourth and final game. Princeton and Monmouth have only faced one common opponent and it was Navy. The Tigers split a four-game series with the Midshipmen, while Monmouth won a single meeting.
Princeton's Matt Welsh (0-0, 11.25 ERA) is slated to face Monmouth's Andy McDonnell (0-2, 33.75 ERA).
