April 15, 2010 | Women's Lacrosse
PRINCETON, N.J. (4/14/10) - Junior goalie Erin Tochihara made a season-high 14 saves but No. 3 ranked Maryland was too much to handle as the Terrapins earned a 13-6 win over Princeton in women's lacrosse on Wednesday, April 14 at Princeton Stadium.
Maryland's Karri Ellen Johnson had a seven-point night scoring six goals and one assist while Sarah Mollison had three goals and assists each. Caitlyn McFadden added three points and Katie Schwarzmann had two.
Senior Kristin Morrison paced the Tigers' offense with two goals and one assist for three points and junior Maisie Devine scored twice.
The teams traded goals in 13 seconds, with Johnson getting Maryland on the board first at 22:02. Devine scored for Princeton at 21:49 when she picked up a feed on the doorstep from freshman Charlotte Davis immediately after sophomore Barb Previ won the draw.
The Terrapins went on a three-goal run to take a 4-1 lead but the Tigers wouldn't let them get away so quickly, scoring two in 14 seconds to make it a 4-3 game at 13:14. Devine added her second of the night, a low shot off a pass from Morrison in the lane. Morrison found the back of the night herself after sophomore Cassie Pyle won the next draw and passed off to sophomore Lindsey deButts who picked up a streaking Morrison.
A goal by Laura Merrifield sparked a six-goal Terrapin run that extended into the second half to sit the Tigers back, 10-3.
The Tigers rallied and tallied three unanswered to make it a 10-6 game with 7:34 to play. Morrison started with a rocket to back of the net at 11:09. Senior Jenna Washabaugh and Pyle would each convert on eight-meter attempts.
Just as Princeton started to get its momentum, Maryland's Johnson struck again with a goal in transition at 5:48. She and Mollison would each score in the final two minutes to set the score.
Maryland goalkeeper Brittany Dipper made seven saves on 13 shots as the Terrapins improve to 13-1, while Tochihara made 14 saves on 27 stops as the Tigers' record moves to 5-7.
Maryland had the advantage in shots (36-21), ground balls (22-15) and draw controls (12-9).
Princeton returns to its Ivy League schedule on Saturday, April 17 when it travels to Harvard for a 1 p.m., game.
