The last three IRA national champions met Saturday morning on Lake Carnegie for The Platt Cup, and the most recent of those champions proved to be too strong. Reigning national and Ivy champion Princeton ran its win streak to 18 with a victory over Cornell and St. Joseph's.
The Tiger first varsity, which ended Cornell's two-year reign at the IRAs last spring, remained undefeated with a winning time of 6:08.6, while Cornell finished second in 6:13.3. St. Joseph's brought a varsity eight to the competition and finished third in 6:44.8.
Princeton has now won 34 of 44 Platt Cups overall and broke a 4-4 tie over the last eight years with its victory. The top-ranked Tigers improved to 5-0 on the season and will host Penn next weekend for The Wood-Hammond Cup.
The Tigers added a win in the second varsity race, finishing in 6:24.1 for a 4.5-second victory. The Big Red battled back for a win in the 3V (6:25.9-6:40.0) and the first novice (6:21.0-6:33.5). St. Joseph's also brought a novice eight, and it also finished third in its race.
Princeton and Cornell will meet again May 16 in Worcester, Mass., at the 2010 EARC Championships.
