Softball Tigers Sweep Sunday Pair at Columbia
April 18, 2010 | Softball
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Six was the magic number for the Princeton softball team Sunday in Manhattan as the Tigers took two from Columbia, 6-4 and 6-2, to win the four-game series from the Lions.
With its first three-game win streak of the season, the Tigers improve to 10-26 overall on the campaign and 4-8 in Ivy League play. Cornell took three of four from Penn, putting the Big Red three games ahead of the Quakers in the Ivy South and six in front of the Tigers. Next weekend, Princeton will host Penn and Cornell will host Columbia (10-25, 2-10) in a pair of four-game series as Ivy South play continues.
Game 1: Princeton 6, Columbia 4
A four-run sixth inning allowed the Tigers to break open a tie game and defeat Columbia 6-4 in Sunday's opener.
Jamie Lettire brought home an RBI each in the first and third innings, but Columbia and Princeton were tied 2-2 after a Dani Pineda two-run single closed the gap for the Lions in the third against Liza Kuhn.
The score remained tied at 2-2 until Princeton pushed four across in the sixth inning. Following a home run by Sarah Rounsifer, Ellen Scott, Collette Abbott and Megan Weidrick all had RBIs to help the Tigers take a 6-2 lead. Columbia was able to halve the deficit to 6-4 in its half of the sixth, but Kuhn got the Lions to strand three runners over the last two innings to preserve the win.
Game 2: Princeton 6, Columbia 2
Princeton never trailed in Sunday's second game as Lettire picked up her third pitching win of the season in a 6-2 Tiger victory.
Abbott started it off with a leadoff home run in the first inning, and a second-inning RBI groundout from Lizzy Pierce made it 2-0 in favor of Princeton.
Columbia cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second with a Maggie Johnson home run, but round-trippers from Candace Button in the sixth and Kelsey Quist and Rounsifer in the seventh gave the Tigers a 6-1 lead heading into Columbia's last at bat. The Lions were able to get back only one of those runs, and the Tigers had their Sunday sweep.
Princeton's doubleheaders with Penn next Saturday and Sunday at Class of 1895 Field will each begin at 12:30 p.m.
