Sixth-Ranked Open Women Take On Columbia, Rutgers Saturday
April 02, 2010 | Women's Rowing - Open
After a highly impressive start to its 2010 season, the sixth-ranked Princeton open women will remain on Lake Carnegie this weekend to take on local rivals Columbia and Rutgers.
This will be the third regatta of the morning, following the men's heavyweights and men's lightweights. The open women are scheduled to begin at 11:15 a.m., with the varsity eight scheduled to race at 12:15 p.m.
Princeton moved up two spots in the national polls last week when it swept both No. 5 Brown and No. 10 Ohio State on Lake Carnegie in the 2010 season opener. The Princeton first varsity, led by senior co-captains Sara Hendershot and Ariel Frost, finished the varsity race in 6:38.6, 2.6 seconds faster than Brown and more than six seconds faster than Ohio State.
Princeton will be hoping for deeper success throughout the entire regatta, as only its varsity eight scored a win last week. The second eight was within three seconds of a win before falling to Brown, while the varsity four finished third in a tight finish between all three crews. Those three boats make up the full team that head coach Lori Dauphiny hopes will be making the trip to the NCAA Championship regatta at the end of May.
Columbia competed at The Connell Cup last weekend and finished third against both Yale and Penn. Yale is the reigning NCAA champion and cruised to the overall victory, while Penn held off Columbia in a spirited duel for second place.
Not only has Rutgers already experienced success this season, but it did so on Lake Carnegie. The Scarlet Knights took on Navy on Princeton's home race course last weekend and scored a tight 2.8 second victory. Rutgers posted a winning time of 7:04.0, while Navy finished in 7:06.8. Rutgers will also be looking for greater depth of success, as it dropped both the second varsity and varsity four competitions.
After this morning's competition, the Princeton women will make their only regular-season road trip in 2010. The Tigers will head to the Cayuga Inlet in Ithaca, N.Y., to take on Cornell and No. 19 Harvard in The Class of 1975 Cup regatta next Saturday. Princeton topped Harvard by 6.8 seconds in this event last year and swept all three major races.
