Harvard Sweeps Softball in Ivy Opener
April 02, 2010 | Softball
PRINCETON -- Harvard rallied in Friday's second game to complete a sweep of the 2010 season's first Ivy League doubleheader for the Princeton softball team. The Crimson took the first game 4-0 and finished the nightcap ahead 3-1.
Harvard 4, Princeton 0
The Crimson's (8-14, 2-0) Rachel Brown tossed a no-hitter in Friday's first game and the Princeton (6-19, 0-2) defense committed three errors that led to three of of Harvard's four runs in the 4-0 Tiger defeat.
Brown had a perfect game going until the sixth, when pinch hitter Kelsey VandeBergh reached on an error to lead off the frame and was subsequently retired on a fielder's choice off the bat of Candy Button.
Alex Peyton took the loss for the Tigers in the circle, giving up nine hits but not walking a batter in her complete-game seven innings.
Harvard 3, Princeton 1
Jamie Lettire's first-inning double staked Princeton to a one-run lead, but Harvard broke through for three in the sixth to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Princeton stranded six runners in scoring position in the second game. Harvard began its comeback with one out in the sixth against Princeton's Liza Kuhn, reaching four straight batters to score three runs and re-take the lead. Nicole Ontiveros managed a bunt single to start the seventh in Princeton's last chance, but she ended the game at third base after the next three batters couldn't reach.
Alex Peyton was 3 for 3 in the nightcap and Ontiveros was 2 for 3 after Brown's blanking of the Tigers in the opener.
Saturday at 12:30 p.m., Princeton will host two against Dartmouth, which got swept at Cornell Friday to fall to 1-17 overall and 0-2 in the Ivy.
