Princeton Football Announces 2010 Team Captains
April 22, 2010 | Football
Rising seniors Steven Cody and Matt Zimmerman were named co-captains for the 2010 football season, it was announced by head coach Bob Surace '90 following a team vote during the spring preseason. Both Cody and Zimmerman are two-year starters who will be key players on both sides of the ball next season.
"I have been fortunate to meet so many of the captains of the Princeton football program, and I know that it is a tremendous honor and responsibility," Surace said. "Steve and Matt have shown tremendous leadership throughout the winter and spring. They are both unselfish, dedicated team players that are passionate about Princeton University and its football program."
Cody is a two-time All-Ivy League selection at linebacker and is coming off a 2009 season in which he led the Ivy League and ranked fifth nationally with 11.6 tackles per game. He recorded six double-digit tackle performances and had at least eight tackles in every game. He was named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week after recording 15 tackles and an interception in a win over Cornell, and his 77-yard interception return for a touchdown was instrumental in an early-season win at Lehigh. He had back-to-back 16-tackles games, including one against No. 23 Colgate in a game shown live on ESPNU, and he has been the team leader in tackles over each of the last two seasons.
Zimmerman has been the starting fullback since the 2008 season opener at The Citadel, where he scored a touchdown. Last season, he rushed the ball 27 times for 141 yards and a touchdown and caught 23 passes for 153 yards; his touchdown came on a 30-yard sprint against Yale to help secure a 24-17 victory over the Bulldogs. He followed that with a season-best nine rushes in 23-11 win at Dartmouth; for his career, he averages more than 11 yards per game in both rushing and receiving.
Princeton will wrap up their spring season this Saturday afternoon with the annual Spring Game scheduled for 1 p.m. on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium.
