April 24, 2010 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
The top-ranked Princeton men's lightweight crew extended its regular season win streak to 20 Saturday morning by sweeping both No. 6 Georgetown and No. 8 Penn on Lake Carnegie.
Princeton took three of the five overall races, including a first varsity showdown for the Wood-Hammond Trophy. It is Princeton's 55th win in this regatta overall, including 31 of the last 32, and sets up a top-ranked showdown next weekend in Princeton.
The Tiger first varsity retained the Wood-Hammond Trophy with a winning time of 5:44.5, while Georgetown battled hard and lost by only 2.4 seconds. The Penn varsity eight placed third in 5:53.8. Princeton also grabbed a win in the second varsity race, and this one came with a more comfortable margin. The Tigers finished in 5:54.2, more than nine seconds faster than second-place Georgetown.
In the novice eight race, Princeton won in a time of 6:05.4, while Georgetown finished second in 6:13.2.
Penn topped Princeton by three seconds in the 3V race, while Georgetown won a 4V/2F race in 6:26.1.
Princeton can now look ahead to next weekend and the annual Goldthwait & Vogel Cups regatta against Harvard and Yale. It will be the final regular season race of the year and it will determine which program will head into the May 16 EARC championships as the top-seeded program. While Princeton is undefeated and at the top of the poll, Harvard is also undefeated and ranked second. The Crimson topped third-seeded Navy by five seconds on the Severn River in Annapolis this morning.
Yale can't be overlooked either. The Bulldogs entered the weekend ranked fourth overall and finished in a dead heat with Dartmouth Saturday on the Connecticut River in Hanover.
