Baseball Visits Rutgers on Tuesday
April 05, 2010 | Baseball
The 2-2 weekend moved the Tigers to 7-14 overall this season. Princeton played four tight games, never leading or trailing by more than two runs through the 38 innings played as two of the four games went to extra innings. Princeton took both opening games, beating Harvard 4-3 in 12 on Saturday and blanking Dartmouth 2-0 in the scheduled seven innings on Sunday. The nightcaps went the way of the visitors as Harvard win 4-2 on Saturday and Dartmouth won 5-4 in 10 innings on Sunday.
Princeton had four well-pitched games over the weekend as all four starters turned in a solid effort and the Tigers lowered their team ERA by more than a run and a half. Offensively both Alex Flink and Brian Berkowitz hit at .500 or above for the weekend. Both had solo homers as well as the Tigers hit three on the weekend, including Jon Broscious' sixth of the campaign. Berkowitz and Broscious both drove in three over the weekend.
Princeton will play its first Northern non-league game on Tuesday when the Tigers travel to Rutgers. Princeton and Rutgers have played every year for the past several seasons and will meet Tuesday for 151st time in the all-time series. Rutgers and Princeton have split the last five games with each team winning twice and a fifth game ending in a tie due to darkness. Last year Rutgers won 10-7 at Clarke Field while Princeton took the 2008 meeting 1-0 in Piscataway.
Rutgers is 14-11 overall and 5-1 through two weeks of Big East play. Rutgers had its seven-game winning streak snapped on Sunday when the Scarlet Knights dropped the finale of a three-game series at home against Pittsburgh. Rutgers and Princeton have not faced any common opponents.
The tentative starters for Tuesday's game are Princeton's Kevin Link (1-1, 5.59 ERA) and Rutgers' Dennis Hill (0-4, 9.27 ERA)
