Baseball Team Drops Midweek Game at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (4/6/10) - The Princeton baseball team outhit Rutgers, but a first inning error led to six unearned runs as the Scarlet Knights earned a 10-2 win over the Tigers on Tuesday afternoon at Bainton Field.
The Tigers outhit Rutgers 11-10 as three freshmen led the charge with multiple hits in the game. Nate Baird had three while Matt Bowman and Alex Flink each had two.
Princeton jumped out to a lead in the game with two runs in the first inning. With an out, Noel Gonzales-Luna singled and a walk to Brian Berkowitz put two on with two outs for Jon Broscious, who knocked a single over the Rutgers third baseman to drive in Gonzales-Luna for his team-leading 16th RBI of the season. John Mishu followed up with another single to plate Berkowitz and Princeton led 2-0 after its opening at-bat.
The lead was shortlived though as Rugters scored seven times in the bottom of the first to gain an insurmountable lead. Michael Lang led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run. Rutgers drew two walks around a fielder's choice and a strikeout and Princeton starter Kevin Link appeared to have an inning-ending groundout, but an error left the bases loaded and Rutgers took advantage. First, Jeff Melillo drew a walk to plate the second run and then Dan Betteridge tripled to clear the bases and make the score 5-2. Brandon Boykin completed the inning with a two-run homer and the inning ended with Rutgers leading 7-2. The Scarlet Knights added three runs in the fourth inning, two of which were earned.
Link took the loss, allowing seven runs on three hits in an inning. Only one run was earned in the inning. A total of six Tigers pitched in the loss. Matt Grabowski allowed three runs in three innings of work and then Ryan Makis, Matt Welsh, Ross Staine and Chad Ohlendorf all added scoreless innings of relief.
Princeton fell to 7-16 with the loss. The Tigers return to Ivy League play this weekend when they visit Brown on Saturday and Yale on Sunday.
