Baseball Resumes League Slate This Weekend at Brown and Yale
April 09, 2010 | Baseball
Princeton opened Ivy play last weekend at home by splitting its doubleheaders against Harvard and Dartmouth. On both days, Princeton took the openers, and the visitors grabbed the second game. Princeton then took on local rival Rutgers on Tuesday and fell 10-2 in non-league action to drop its overall record to 7-16 this season.
It was a good weekend in general for the Gehrig Division as all four Gehrig teams are at .500 or better following four games played. Penn and Columbia each swept Yale and split with Brown and are now 3-1, while Princeton and Cornell both split both games and are one game back at 2-2. On the Rolfe side, Brown, Dartmouth and Harvard are all tied at 2-2, while Yale is two games back with an 0-4 record.
Princeton will look for its weekend pitching to continue where it left off last weekend as the team had a 2.61 ERA in the four Ivy games and all four starters put forth quality starts. Zak Hermans pitched six shutout innings to earn a win on Sunday and earned Ivy Rookie of the Week honors and Dan Barnes allowed just two earned runs in nine innings on Saturday in a game Princeton won in 12 innings. Langford Stuber and David Palms also put forth strong efforts despite Princeton losses.
The Tiger lineup hit .250 in the Ivy weekend and will look to up that this weekend at Brown and Yale. Alex Flink and Brian Berkowitz both hit above .500 against Dartmouth and Harvard, while John Mishu and Jon Broscious also made offensive contributions, including Broscious' sixth homer of the season. Flink and Berkowitz also hit homers over the weekend.
Princeton will start the weekend in Providence to take on Brown. The Bears are 5-17 overall and also 2-2 in the Ivy League. Brown has had Princeton's number in recent years, winning seven of the last eight meetings between the schools. Last season Brown took both meetings in Princeton, winning by scores of 7-3 and 7-2. Princeton's last win in the series came at Brown in the second game of a doubleheader in the 2008 season.
The Bears split their opening league weekend by earning splits against both Penn and Columbia. During the week the Bears won at Quinnipiac and split a doubleheader against Siena at home. Brown and Princeton have not faced any common opponents.
The Tigers complete the weekend on Sunday at Yale. The Bulldogs are 12-11 overall but are 0-4 in the Ivy League. Princeton has either swept or split with Yale in each of the last 13 seasons with the teams splitting in each of the last two. Last year Princeton was shutout 6-0 in the opening game and then took the nightcap of the doubleheader 9-3.
Yale has the best overall record in the league but finds itself winless after a weekend of play. Both Columbia and Penn swept the Bulldogs last weekend after Yale started the season 12-7 overall. Yale split a midweek doubleheader with Sacred Heart on Tuesday.
