Higginson Wins Twice as Women's Track & Field Takes 4th at Heps

PRINCETON, N.J. (5/9/10) - The Princeton women's track & field team finished fourth at the 2010 Ivy League Outdoor Track & Field Heptagonal Championship on Sunday, May 9 at Weaver Stadium.
After leading the team standings after day one, Princeton slipped into second place after the 100-meter hurdles. Three events later Princeton was knocked into third place with Cornell leading with Brown in between and with six events left the Tigers couldn't catch back up.
Highlighting the day was a double victory by junior Ashley Higginson, who won both the steeplechase and the 3000-meter run. This is her second straight steeplechase victory as she finished the course in 10:20.53. Later in the day she earned her second victory with a winning time of 9:46.71 in the 3000. It marked her first Heps victory in the 3000 after taking third in the event twice before.
Freshman Mel Newbery also had an impressive afternoon. In her second time running the steeplechase in her collegiate career, she finished second at 10:28.47. Newbery scored in the 3000-meter run as well, clocking in at 10:00.25.
Also scoring in the 3000 was sophomore Alex Banfich who took third place with a time of 9:50.10. Banfich also claimed second in the 5000-meter run. She took the early lead in the race and held it throughout but a final push by Brown's Ariel Wright in the straightaway gave way to her second-place finish. Banfich clocked in at 16:38.96 and Wright 16:37.22. Junior Sarah Cummings, who won the 10,000-meter run yesterday, took sixth in the 5000 with a time of 16:51.75.
Sophomore Eileen Moran took home two third-place finishes in the sprints. In the 100-meter dash finals she clocked in at 11.89 and in the 200-meter dash finals she posted a time of 24.14.
Freshman Alexis Mikaelian finished fourth in the 1500-meter run at 4:36.08 adding four points to the team total.
In the relays, Princeton's 4x800 took second place with a time of 8:56.39. The 4x100 was fourth at 47.50 and the 4x400 was sixth at 3:48.52.
Junior Thanithia Billings earned two third-place finishes in the throwing events. She was third in the shot put, throwing to 14.99 meters (49-02.25) and threw the discus to 43.60 meters (143-00) a personal best.
Junior Isabell von Loga was sixth in the shot put, throwing to 13.61 meters (44-08.00) her best mark of the season.
Princeton hosts the ECAC Championship May 14-16 in the final meet before the NCAA East Regional.
The official list of those competing in the NCAA East Regional will be announced by the NCAA on Monday, May 17 at 9 p.m.
