Higginson Sets ECAC Record in Steeplechase with Top Time in the East Region
May 15, 2010 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
PRINCETON, N.J. (5/14/10) - The 2010 ECAC & IC4A Outdoor Track & Field Championships got underway on Friday, May 14 at Weaver Stadium.
The meet was delayed over an hour because of lightning during a quick moving thunderstorm, pushing the distance events back nearly 70 minutes.
In the first event of the day, junior Ashley Higginson dispatched an eight-year record in the women's steeplechase with a time of 9:57.50. The time is the top mark in the East region as Higginson becomes just the third athlete in the nation to post a time of under 10 minutes in the steeplechase. Her time topples James Madison's Mollie DeFranceso's time of 9:58.77 from ECAC's in 2002, as she also rewrites her personal best and school record with this time.
In that same event, freshman Mel Newbery placed fourth at 10:25.59 shaving nearly three seconds off her time from Heps just one weekend ago when she ran a 10:28.47.
Junior Sarah Cummings was a scorer in the 5000 finishing sixth at 16:51.16.
On the men's side, junior Kyle Soloff placed third overall out of 40 runners in the 5000, with a time of 14:04.55. In the first heat, sophomore Max Kaulbach finished sixth at 14:35.39.
The meet ended just after 11 p.m., as the men's 10,000-meter run concluded day one.
The decathlon and heptathlon continue on Saturday at 9 a.m., with individual events beginning at 10 a.m., with the women's hammer throw.
