Men's Swim/Dive Team Announces 2011 Captains, '10 Award Winners
May 20, 2010 | Men's Swimming and Diving
The two-time defending Ivy League champion Princeton men's swimming and diving team recently announced both its 2010 team award winners and its trio of captains for the 2010-11 season.
The War Memorial Swimming Trophy: Christopher Quemena '10
Presented in memory of the eight former members of Princeton swimming teams who died in WWII to that senior member of the University swimming squad who has made the outstanding contribution during upperclass years to the sport through diligence in studies, devotion to swimming, and excellence in performance
Quemena, one of the Princeton tri-captains this past season, was an integral part of Princeton's Ivy League championship team. He earned first-team All-Ivy honors in helping the 800 free relay to a title and finished second to teammate Jonathan Christensen in the 200 IM individual final.
The William B. Nash Memorial Trophy: William Lawley '13
Presented in memory of William B. Nash '55 by his teammates of the Class of 1955 for outstanding sportsmanship and performance by a freshman
Lawley won his first Ivy League individual title when he took the 200 free in 1:36.82 and he added two more consolation finals appearances in the Ivy championship meet.
The John Alan Swabey Memorial Trophy: Alex Morrison '12
Presented in memory of John Alan Swabey '55 by his teammates for contribution through spirit, sportsmanship, and improvement in swimming
Morrison recorded two top-six performances during the sweep of the HYP meet and won the 200 back in a team victory over Columbia.
The Dermod F. Quinn Memorial Award: Jonathan Chistensen '12
Presented in memory of Dermod F. Quinn '69 by the swimming team, coaches, and alumni to that member of the swimming team who best illustrates the qualities of intense determination and effort in workouts exemplified by Dermod F. Quinn and who has provided a constant source of inspiration by his performance in practice
Christensen had one of the most dominant seasons in the Ivy League. He was less than half a second away from a sweep of his three individual races at the Ivy League championships; Christensen won both the 200 IM and 100 breast, and he placed second in the 200 breast.
The Matthew R. Weiner Class of 2002, C. Rob Orr Award: Jonathan Hartmann '10 and Christopher Quemena '10
Established in 2002 in memory of Matthew R. Weiner and to honor C. Rob Orr, coach extraordinaire. This “Muscle, Mind, and Heart” award is awarded to that senior member of the Princeton Varsity Swim Team who consistently demonstrates those qualities shared by Matt and Rob of inspirational dedication with integrity, a challenging intensity and a genuine respect for himself, his teammates and his university
Quemena's accomplishments are listed above. Hartmann, another tri-captain, earned three championship finals appearances at the Ivy League championship meet and had a weekend-best finish of 4th in the 200 free. He also earned first-team All-Ivy honors as part of the winning 400 and 800 free relays, as well as the 400 medley relay.
The trio of Patrick Biggs, Colin Hanna and Geoff Faux will serve as tri-captains for next season. Biggs is a distance specialist who placed in the Top 5 of the 500, 1000 and 1650 at the 2009 Ivy championship meet. Faux earned first-team All-Ivy honors in 2010 as members of winning relays, placed second in the 50 and qualified for the NCAA Championships. Hanna placed fourth at the Ivy championships in both the 500 and 200 back and is a former Ivy League champion in the 400 IM.
