Three Tigers Advance After Day 1 of NCAA East Regional

GREENSBORO, N.C. (5/27/10) - The Princeton track and field teams began day one of three of the NCAA East Regionals at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.
Junior Sarah Cummings became the first Tiger to qualify for the NCAA Championsips in Eugene, Ore., qualifying in the women's 10,000-meter run. An All-America in the event from last season, Cummings finished 12th out of 48 with a time of 35:25.97 in the preliminary race to move on to the finals.
Also competing for the women's squad on day one was junior Thanithia Billings. Billings threw the shot put to 15.17 meters (49-9.25) on her third attempt to place 24th in the event.
Two runners on the men's team qualified for the semifinals in their respective events.
Sophomore Trevor Van Ackeren finished 14th in the 1500-meter run with a time of 3:48.78. Finishing third in his heat, Van Ackeren earned the bid to the semifinals which will take place on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Freshman Peter Callahan took 18th at 3:49.42, finishing seventh in his heat.
Freshman Russell Dinkins qualified for the semifinals of the 800-meter run. He finished seventh overall in the preliminary run with a time of 1:48.91. He is one of 24 that advanced to the semifinals which will be held on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Junior Craig Pearce threw the hammer to 57.07 meters (187-3) on his third attempt to finish 26th in the hammer throw. Classmate Mike Eddy ran the 400 in 47.43 to finish 37th overall and seventh in his heat.
Competing on Friday for the men's squad will be Dinkins in the semifinals of the 800, sophomore Donn Cabral and senior Elliot Welder in the steeplechase, seniors Justin Frick and Ian Fox in the high jump and senior Eric Plummer in the shot put.
Tomorrow, Ashley Higginson and Mel Newbery will run in the steeplechase, freshman Tory Worthen in the pole vault and Emma Ruggiero and Billings in the hammer throw.
