2010 CDS Preseason FCS All-American Teams
Princeton linebacker Steven Cody, a rising senior and 2010 co-captain, received an early honor this past weekend when he was named to the 2010 CDS Preseason FCS All-American Team. He was the only Ivy League player to be named to either the All-American first or second team.
Cody has been Princeton's leading tackler over the last two seasons and was one of the top tacklers in all of the FCS in 2009. He averaged 11.6 tackles per game last season, the most in the Ivy League and fifth-most in the nation. Despite his league-best 104 tackles, including 10 for loss, he was voted to only the All-Ivy League second team.
He garnered far more respect in the CDS Preseason All-America poll, where he was named to the second-team defense. Only three other Ivy League players were named to the squad, and each earned honorable mention: Dartmouth cornerback Shawn Abuhoff, Brown quarterback Kyle Newhall and Harvard safety Collin Zych.
Cody, who Harvard head coach Tim Murphy called "probably the best pro prospect in the league" during a conference call with the media last season, made at least eight tackles in every game last season and recorded double-digit tackles in six of them. He was named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week after a 15-tackle, one-interception effort against Cornell, and his 77-yard touchdown on an interception helped Princeton to a victory at Lehigh. He recorded back-to-back 16-tackle games against Columbia and Colgate last season, the latter of which came in a nationally televised contest on ESPNU.
Cody has 189 career tackles, including 16.5 for losses, and has 5.5 sacks. He recorded interceptions in wins over Lehigh and Cornell and recorded five pass breakups. He will serve as 2010 co-captain along with classmate Matt Zimmerman, a two-year starter at fullback.
