Four Women's Soccer Players Compete at National Tournament
July 22, 2010 | Women's Soccer
On their way to the national tournament, rising sophomore Stephanie Iantorno's Eclipse Select team, the Region II champion, outscored their opponents 20-4 in five regional games but needed penalty-kick tiebreaker goals - including one from Iantorno - to get through their semifinal before the team enjoyed their third shutout of the tournament in the final.
During their regional competition, the FC Bucks Vipers team featuring rising sophomores Rachel Sheehy and Jen Hoy and rising junior Kim Menafra advanced to the national competition by dominating Region I play, winning five games by a combined score of 26-1. Hoy had three goals in the regional with Sheehy and Menafra getting one apiece.
The draw in Kansas had the two teams facing off in their first pool game July 21, with Iantorno's team winning 2-0. Both teams rebounded to win their next games July 22, with Iantorno's team beating the Region III winner from Texas 2-0 and Hoy scoring three goals to lead the FC Bucks Vipers to a 5-1 win over the Region IV winner from California.
On July 23, the run ended for the FC Bucks Vipers with a 1-0 loss to the Texans, while Eclipse Select tied the Californians 2-2. On the tournament's final day, July 25, Eclipse went into a penalty-kick tiebreaker at 1-1 before the kicks gave the club national title to the Texas-based team, Lonestars 91 Red.
Hoy's three goals in the second pool game gave her the second-most goals of any player in the four-team tournament.
