Women's Tennis Completes First Day at Duke, Columbia Invitationals

DURHAM, N.C. -- Princeton's four entrants in the Duke Invitational picked up wins in doubles competition Friday, but all four fell in their first-round singles matches.
Hilary Bartlett and Taylor Marable, the eighth-ranked pair on the ITA's preseason chart, won their first-round doubles match over the Wisconsin pair of Jenny Hois and Aleksandra Markovic 8-6 in the top doubles flight, but lost in the semifinals to Monica Gorny and Hanna Mar of Duke, 8-1. Brett Ellen Keeler and Rachel Saiontz also won their first-round match in the "C" flight over the Texas pair of Maggie Mello and Caroline Larsson, but fell to Mississippi's Gabby Rangel and Connor Vogel.
At Duke, play will continue Saturday with the singles players competing in consolation matches and both doubles teams in third-place matches. At Columbia, Sarah Hoffman and Monica Chow each hold No. 1 seeds in their respective singles flights and together hold the top doubles seed. The two Tigers each won their second-round singles matches after first-round byes, Hoffman over Diamond Adams of St. John's, 6-3, 6-0, and Chow over Jamie Yapp-Shing of Penn, 6-1, 6-1. Saturday, Hoffman will face Dina Shapoval of Columbia in the "A" flight semifinals, while Chow will face Bianca Sanon of Columbia in the "B" flight semifinals. In doubles play, the Tiger pair will face Ece Firat and Jenny Yonkus of St. John's in the bracket's quarterfinals.
