Men's Golf Finishes Close Second at McLaughlin
September 18, 2010 | Men's Golf
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -- With the underclassmen leading the way, the Princeton men's golf team finished a close second at the McLaughlin Invitational hosted by St. John's on the Red Course at Bethpage State Park.
The Tigers had a one-shot lead after Friday's two rounds, but West Florida caught Princeton and won by two strokes. Whereas Princeton followed up a team score of 8-under in the second round with a 1-over in round three, West Florida had its best round of the tournament Saturday with a 4-under. The Tigers' 8-under was the best round of any team across all three rounds and folowed a first-round 7-over earlier Friday.
Chase Lovett-Woodsum had a one-stroke lead on the individual leaderboard after two rounds, but Josh Briere of Johnson & Wales (Fla.) and Brendan Kelly of Villanova were able to wrest away the lead to finish as co-champions at 3-under. Lovett-Woodsum held onto the claim to the lowest round of the tournament after a 5-under 65 in Friday's second tour.
Bernie D'Amato and Lovett-Woodsum both finished at 2-under for the tournament, while Evan Harmeling was third among Tigers and tied for 15th overall at 1-over.
