Rutgers Tops Women's Soccer 2-0 in Tigers' Season Opener
September 04, 2010 | Women's Soccer
Though the Tigers gained valuable experience from their opener, their opponent, 24th-ranked Rutgers, got the 2-0 win.
The Scarlet Knights (3-1) lifted a ball behind the Princeton defense and past a diving Tiger goalkeeper Alyssa Pont for their first goal in the 14th minute, with Jonelle Filigno on the putaway, and scored their second in the 59th minute when Tricia DiPaolo found Karla Schacher on an end-line crossing pass.
"We got the opportunity to play a good team early in the season," Princeton head coach Julie Shackford said. "We saw things that we need to work on."
Princeton (0-1) forced Rutgers goalkeeper Emmy Simpkins to make four saves, and Simpkins was perfect on every Tiger shot on goal. Two of Rutgers' three attempts within the frame found the back of the net, with Kristin Watson getting credit for the only Princeton save.
Watson relieved Pont in the 77th minute, marking the first time since the first round of the 2008 NCAA tournament that anyone other than Pont was between the posts for Princeton.
Watson was one of many who got their first taste of competition in 2010 during the game, with 19 Tigers seeing the field. Only three players - junior Kim Menafra and sophomores Diane Metcalf-Leggette and Alison Nabatoff - played the full 90.
Princeton will have to wait less than two full days before getting another opportunity when it hosts Seton Hall to open Roberts Stadium for its third season.
