Swim/Dive Season Resumes With Final Double Dual, Women's Senior Day
January 20, 2011 | Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving
It's been quite some time since Dec. 5, when both the Princeton men's and women's swimming and diving teams were finishing off wire-to-wire victories at the Big Al Open. Seven weeks later, both teams are primed for a sprint towards the Ivy League Championship weekend; that charge begins Sunday with home meets against Dartmouth.
Both Princeton squads are the reigning Ivy League champions and were ranked second in the national mid-major poll following the impressive performances after the Big Al Open. Since then, a holiday break and finals have put competition into the background for both teams; that will end at 11 a.m. on Sunday, when both welcome Dartmouth into DeNunzio Pool.
For the Princeton women, it will be their final home competition until the Ivy League Championships (Feb. 24-26), where the Tigers will be going for their 10th title in 12 years. Head coach Susan Teeter will be looking forward to seeing the progress of her freshmen, including Lisa Boyce and Andrea Kropp, who both set program records within their first month of collegiate competition. Boyce broke the mark in the 100 back, while Kropp took down a record of Alicia Aemisegger's in the 200 breast.
While they are part of a freshman class that has generated plenty of early excitement, Sunday will be focused on Princeton's six-person Class of 2011, which will be honored during the meet. That group — Lauren Benjamin, Julie Kochman, Carolyn Littlefield, Nicole McAndrew, co-captain Ming Ong and Megan Waters — have been part of two Ivy League championship teams and will try to end their careers with a third next month.
The Princeton men, who have never lost a home dual meet since DeNunzio Pool opened in 1990, broke into the national Top 25 this season and have been led by an impressive junior class, including Ivy League individual champions Jon Christensen and Colin Cordes. The Tigers have been dominant in wins over Penn, Cornell and Brown, and will try to extend that streak over Dartmouth.
While the men will need to travel to Cambridge for the Ivy League championship meet, they still have one more date at DeNunzio. The men's Senior Day will be Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. in a home meeting against a strong Navy team.
