Women's Track & Field Win 11 Events at Princeton Relays

PRINCETON, N.J. (1/22/11) - The Princeton Relays were held on Saturday, Jan. 22 at Jadwin Gym, the first athletic event since final exams. The women's track & field team dominated the meet, winning 11 of 16 events, including: weight, shot, pole vault, 60-meter hurdles, mile, 500, 800, 1000, 3000, 4x400 and 300.
Princeton swept the throws with seniors Emma Ruggiero and Thanithia Billings winning in the weight and shot put. Ruggerio won the weight throw at 17.55, the only competitor to throw over 17 meters. Junior Alyssa Pehmoeller took fourth with a throw of 15.30 meters. Billings had a first-place throw of 14.59 meters in the shot put.
Sophomore Tory Worthen earned a victory in the pole vault, clearing 3.75 meters. After her mark there was a three-way tie for second place. Junior Lydia Arias and sophomore Lauren Tauscher were two of the three that reached 3.60 meters for second place.
Sophomore Erin Guty found herself third in the 60-meter dash clocking in at 7.75. Sophomore Abidemi Adenikinju was fifth at 7.91 and Lily Miller was seventh at 8.11. The trio reached the finals out of 49 who ran in the preliminaries.
Senior Bianca Mathabane won the 60-meter hurdles at 8.94. Classmate Lauren Barber was third at 9.07, and later would take fifth in the triple jump, reaching 11.30 meters. Freshman Beth McKenna would finish seventh in the hurdles with a time of 9.53.
The remaining events were run in sections.
Princeton had four of the top five times in the mile. Senior Ashley Higginson won the event at 4:50.63. Classmate Sarah Cummings was third at 4:51.64, followed by junior Alex Banfich at 4:52.51 and freshman Theresa Devine at 5:03.49.
Freshman Carrie Vuong was second in the 400-meter dash, as one of three that finished in under a minute. Vuong's time was 59.63.
The Tigers earned wins in the next two events with freshman picking up the victories.
Princeton went 1-2-3 in the 500, led by freshman Kristin Smoot at 1:16.45. Sophomore Joie Hand ran in at 1:17.20, followed by freshman Kacie O'Neil at 1:17.30.
Freshman Molly Higgins won earn a win in the 800 at 2:15.66.
Sophomore Alexis Mikaelian kept things rolling by winning the 1000 at 2:53.59. Classmate Melissa Zajdel was second with a time of 2:54.19.
Sophomore Mel Newbery won the 3000 at 9:44.78, the only runner to finish in less than 10 minutes with 35 runners competing. The next fastest runner was Alyssa Mullen of La Salle, who couldn't get near Newbery's time, at 10:40.16. Newbery's previous best time in the event was 9:50.62.
Zajdel, Higgins, Emily Livingston, Michelle Yousefian ran the best time in the 4x400, at 4:01.48.
Junior Eileen Moran wrapped up the night by winning the 300 at 40.65. Classmate Danielle Glaeser was third at 40.86 as Princeton and Rutgers dominated the event.
Princeton will compete at the Armory Quad Meet at the Armory in NYC next Saturday, Jan. 29.
