January 23, 2011 | Men's Swimming and Diving
With major events still on the horizon, including the biggest weekend of the regular season upcoming, the Princeton men's swimming and diving team knew it needed an impressive showing following the winter break to start 2011 on the right note.
Both individual wins and impressive team depth led the men to a 156-85 victory over Dartmouth Sunday afternoon at DeNunzio Pool. Princeton improved to 4-0 with the win and continued a 20-year unbeaten streak at its home venue.
The Princeton men opened by winning the 300 medley relay in 2:29.49. The quartet of Kaspar Raigla, Kyung Jun Park, Michael Monovoukas and Geoffrey Faux won in 2:29.49, while the foursome of Adam Lebovitz, Eric Materniak, Charlie Wang and Matthew LaMonaca took third in 2:32.91.
Freshman Paul Nolle opened the individual competition by finishing third in the 1000 in a time of 9:31.07, while senior tri-captain Patrick Biggs finished fourth in 9:47.88.
Brett Lullo won the 200 free in 1:42.40, while teammate Nicholas Beaulieu placed fourth in 1:45.22. Junior teammate Colin Cordes followed with a win in the 50 (20.78), while fellow Princeton swimmers Andres Tung (21.26) and Colin Hanna (21.37) took second and third in the event.
Princeton went 1-2 in the 100 IM, with junior Jonathan Christensen winning in 51 seconds and Ryan Chiu finishing second in 52.91. The first diving competition was the one-meter event, and sophomore Stevie Vines won with 333.30 points.
Hanna took second in the 100 fly in 51.26, but Princeton bounced right back with a victory in the 100 free. Travis McNamara won in 47.23, while Thomas Fellowes placed fourth in 48.49.
Cordes picked up his second win of the day by claiming the 100 back in 50.71. He topped fellow Ivy individual champion Christensen (51.97) and Lullo (52.25) in an event that saw Princeton place four of the top five. Rounding out the group was Nolle, who took fifth in 53.15.
Hanna and Chiu went 2-3 in the 400 free. Dartmouth's Nejc Zupan won the event in 3:36.16, while Hanna took second in 3:38.98 and Chiu took third in 3:40.55.
Vines added another win in the three-meter competition, scoring 372.60 points for a comfortable win over Dartmouth's Mikey Brown.
The Tigers dominated the final individual event, going 1-2-3-4 in the 100 breast. Park won the event in 58.13, while Materniak finished second in 59.36. Daniel Hasler took third in 1:00.29, while Beau Pickering finished fourth in 1:00.96.
The day ended with the 300 free relay, where Princeton finished 1-2 to complete the win. The foursome of Christensen, Cordes, Lawley and David Reid won in 2:05.26, while the team of McNamara, Tung, LaMonaca and Faux placed second in 2:06.96.
Princeton knows it will face a much tougher challenge next weekend when it heads to New Haven for the annual H-Y-P meet. Both Harvard and Princeton have been Ivy League champions this past decade, while Yale has been on the rise and will compete in its own pool. The event will be a two-day meet, beginning Saturday at 6 p.m. and concluding Sunday at noon.
