Princeton Picked First In Ivy Women's Hoops Poll
October 26, 2011 | General, Women's Basketball
2011-12 Princeton women's basketball schedule
The Princeton women's basketball team has the satisfaction of knowing that it has been picked to win another Ivy League championship - and the motivation of knowing that not everyone is sold on a three-peat.
Princeton earned 14 of the 17 first-place votes in the media poll, released by the Ivy League Wednesday morning.
In all Princeton had 133 points, followed by Harvard with 117.
The Tigers will enter the 2011-12 season coming off back-to-back Ivy League championships, with a 27-1 league record and a 50-8 overall record in that time. Princeton has also made consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament, marking the first two NCAA appearances in program history.
Since the advent of the full double round-robin format in Ivy women's basketball back in 1983, no team has won three consecutive outright championships.
Princeton does return four starters from last year's team, losing only Ivy League Player of the Year Addie Micir. While that is a big hit to graduation, Princeton does return, among others, first-team All-Ivy selections Devona Allgood and Lauren Edwards and Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year Lauren Polansky.
Also back for Princeton is Niveen Rasheed, who was averaging team-bests of 16.2 points and 7.3 rebounds before she tore her ACL in late December.
Princeton opens the 2011-12 season Nov. 11 at home against St. Joe's.
