Men's Water Polo Team Looks for Second Straight Ivy Tourney Title
October 28, 2011 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON (10/28/11) - The 14th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team travels to Harvard this weekend for the Ivy League Championships in its final tune-up for the CWPA Southern Championships. Princeton claimed the Ivy championship last year in the event that features varsity teams from three Ivy schools and club teams from the remaining five Ivy schools.
Princeton went 3-0 last weekend with wins over George Washington, Fordham and Iona. The win on Friday over GW clinched first place for the Tigers in the CWPA's Southern Division and means the Tigers will have the top seed for the Southern Championships, which will be held the first weekend of November at DeNunzio Pool. Princeton's 6-2 league mark is guaranteed to be at least one game better than second place. Bucknell is 5-3 with its league schedule complete and Navy is 3-3 with two league games scheduled this Saturday.
CWPA Rookie of the Week Matt Weber scored nine goals to lead Princeton last weekend as the Tigers saw goals from 17 different scorers over the three games. Princeton scored 45 goals over the three games. With his nine goals, Weber took over the team lead in scoring with 33 goals this season. He has one more than Kayj Shannon's 32 and three more than Tim Wenzlau's 30.
The Tigers will play twice this Sunday. The Ivy Championship actually gets underway on Saturday with a five-game slate of games between the club teams and Harvard. Princeton and Brown will play the two teams that emerge from the first rounds in the semifinal round on Sunday morning. Games against club teams will not count towards Princeton's overall record and individual stats will not be recorded.
Last season the Ivy Championships took place at DeNunzio Pool and Princeton was victorious. The Tigers defeated Yale in an exhibition game in the semifinals and then defeated Brown in overtime to take the title.
