PRINCETON – Niveen Rasheed was raised to appreciate what she has, and this past year has been particularly enlightening.
Her most recent experience occurred at a remote village in Africa on a visit to an impoverished orphanage. Rasheed, 20, took part in an international trip with the Princeton University women's basketball team in September, where the second leg of the 11-day trip put them in Dakar, Senegal.
Newborns in cloth diapers were separated from buzzing flies only by netting. Toddlers in an adjoining room – many of their mothers having died while giving birth – immediately raised their arms to be embraced by the young women. Many of the children cried when Rasheed and her teammates motioned that it was time for the rarest of visitors to leave the cramped concrete building.
