Tiger Swimming/Diving Completes Princeton Fall Invitational

Both the Princeton men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed their first home meet of the 2011-12 season with several successful performances during the Princeton Fall Invitational.
The men opened with a win in the 200 medley relay, as the quartet of Kaspar Raigla, Jonathan Christensen, Michael Monovoukas and Matthew LaMonaca won in 1:33.84, more than two seconds faster than the rest of the field.
Christensen grabbed the first individual victory by taking the 400 IM in 4:03.15, while freshman Caleb Tuten took second in 4:04.49. Monovoukas won the 100 fly in 51.28, while Cordes won the 200 free in 1:40.15. The Tigers went 1-2-3 in the event, as juniors Will Lawley (1:41.81) and Andres Tung (1:44.84) placed just after Christensen.
Junior Ryan Chiu led another 1-2-3 Princeton finish in the 100 breast. He won in 58.83, just ahead of sophomore Eric Materniak (58.91) and Tuten (59.60). Freshman Michael Strand took the 100 back in 51.26, just ahead of Raigla (52.36) and Maher (52.59).
The 800 free relay team of David Paul, Cordes, Andrew Klutey and Tuten won the 800 free relay in 6:57.88, while the team of Christensen, Lawley, Chiu and Rory Loughran finished second in 7:03.11.
Sophomore Paul Nolle III, one of the Ivy League's top distance swimmers last season, won the 1650 in 15:54.34, while both Maher and Cordes shared a win in the 200 back with matching times of 1:52.02. Sophomore Ian Rea placed second in the 100 free in 47.08, while classmate Daniel Hasler edged Materniak to win the 200 breast in 2:07.76.
In the 3-meter diving competition, Stevie Vines topped teammates Chris Kelly and Mark O'Connell with a winning score of 366.15.
Freshman Oliver Bennett won the 200 fly in 1:50.64, and the 400 free relay team of Maher, Wagner, Rea and Cordes won the 400 free relay in 3:06.52.
On the women's side, the 200 medley relay team of Shirley Wang, Emily Yu, Kathy Qu and Kerry Gruendel won in 1:48.01, while the team of Kasey Morris, Cara Slear, Alexa Powers and Laura Slater placed second in 1:51.02.
Sophomore Rebecca Lewinson won the 400 IM in 4:33.66, while freshman teammates Slear (4:34.21) and Charlotte Leib (4:37.51) took the next two spots. Qu followed with a third-place finish in the 100 fly (58.41), while Smalling won the 200 free in 1:53.91. Both Laura Loughran (1:54.57) and Leib (1:55.30) took second and third.
Gruendel won the 100 breast in 1:07.14, while Wang won the 100 back in 58.59. The 800 relay team of Qu, Theresa Meyer, Leib and Julia Festa won the 800 free relay in 7:50.46, while the quartet of Loughran, Slear, Lauren Shanley and Stacey Rogers placed second in 7:57.10.
Bryna Tsai placed second in the 1-meter diving competition with 277.05 points, while senior Christina Kirkwood placed third with 269.85.
Shanley won the 1650 in 17:12.57, while Loughran placed second in 17:19.86. Wang (2:06.35) began a 1-2-3-4 Princeton finish in the 200 back (Morris-Rogers-Loughran), while Slater took second in the 100 free (53.48). Yu edged Slear to win the 200 breast in 2:25.12, and Qu won the 200 fly in 2:06.40. The 400 free relay team of Loughran, Gruendel, Qu and Slater won the 400 free relay in 3:34.70, while Festa, Wang, Slear and Smalling placed second in 3:37.22.
