In Prelude To Hosting Ivies, Princeton Welcomes Five For 2011 Big Al Open
November 30, 2011 | Men's Swimming and Diving
During the first weekend of March, the Princeton men's swimming and diving team will be looking to complete a four-year sweep of Ivy League Championships when it hosts the conference meet. A taste of that atmosphere will be felt at DeNunzio Pool this weekend, as the Tigers will host five other squads at the three-day Big Al Open.
You can follow the weekend competition through both video stream and live results, with both links listed at the top of the story. A full weekend schedule, including teams, times and event order, can be found below the women-specific preview.
Princeton is 2-0 on the season, with wins of 192-88 over Cornell and 168-112 over Penn. Five freshmen earned individual wins in the meet, including David Paulk, who won both the 500 and the 1000 free. Michael Strand won the 100 back and was part of a victorious 200 medley relay, while Harrison Wagner won the 50 free and was also part of the winning 200 medley relay.
Princeton was dominant in the 2010 Big Al Open, winning the meet with 1,256 points, while Florida placed second with 883.5 points. Columbia held off Brown for third with 644 points. The Princeton-Brown dual meet is scored during this event.
After this weekend, Princeton will be off for a month before competing at Navy on January 7. Navy ended Princeton's two-decade win streak at DeNunzio Pool with a dual meet win last season, and both went on to win their respective conference titles. Princeton will return to DeNunzio Pool Feb. 10 for Senior Day against Columbia, and then will welcome its seven Ivy League rivals for the league championship meet March 1-3.
Thirteen swimming and diving teams will meet at DeNunzio Pool this weekend for the annual Big Al Open, a three-day meet that brings the Princeton programs home for the final time until February. Times for all six sessions (preliminaries and finals), as well as diving, are now available.
The meet, both prelinaries and finals, will be video streamed live on GoPrincetonTigers.TV, which you can access here. You can follow live results, including all preliminary and finals times, here.
Joining the Princeton men and women this weekend will be: Brown (both), Columbia (men), Rutgers (women), Fordham (both), James Madison (women), Rider (both) and Villanova (both).
The competition will begin Friday, Dec. 2, with an 11 a.m. preliminary session and a 6 p.m. finals session. Saturday will also include sessions at 11 and 6, while Sunday will begin with preliminaries at 10 and conclude with finals at 5.
