Edwards One Of 30 Finalists For Lowe's Senior Class Award
November 04, 2011 | Women's Basketball
Lauren Edwards will enter her senior season with the Princeton women's basketball team next Friday night with 982 career points. Reaching the 1,000-point mark will hardly be her only undergraduate accomplishment.
Athletically? She's a two-time first-team All-Ivy League selection.
In the classroom? She's a two-time Academic All-Ivy League selection.
Character and community? She's a team captain who has volunteered her time literally around the world to try to help others.
With all this, it's not suprising that Edwards was one of the 30 final candidates announced for the Lowe's Senior Class Award for women's basketball. The list of 30 men's candidates was also announced.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Each of the lists of 30 players will be narrowed to 10 midway through the year, and those names will be placed on a national ballot for a voting committee made up of coaches, administrators and media members. The men's and women's national winners will be recognized as the two NCAA Final Fours.
Edwards has been a starter for the Tigers since Day 1, and she has led Princeton to a 50-8 overall record, 27-1 in the Ivy League, the last two years, both of which saw Princeton win the Ivy title and reach the NCAA tournament.
Edwards will graduate with a degree in economics with a certificate in politcal economy. Her junior paper was entitled "Regressional Analysis of Aid Flows to Southeast Asian Agriculture," and this past summer she interned in New York City in the Investment Banking Division at Barclays Capital.
She spent the summer before her junior year in Cambodia where she taught English in the Kampong Tralach Village. She also helped to build a self-sustainability English/hospitality school.
On an annual basis, Edwards participates in Weapons of Mass Construction, a community service initiative for Princeton student-athletes to help to build a "green village" that will house offices for public interest and environmental organizations, a training center for inner city youth and homes and artist studios.
Edwards also was involved in a beach cleanup with her employer, Barclays, this summer. In addition she writes pen pal letters during basketball season.
This past summer, Edwards and the rest of the Princeton team spent five days in Senegal, Africa where they held a basketball clinic for local youth and visited an orphanage.
