November 05, 2011 | Men's Tennis
Matt Siow and Matt Spindler won three matches in two days to claim the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship's consolation doubles title Saturday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens.
The Princeton pair defeated California's Carlos Cueto and Ben McLachlan 8-6 earlier Saturday before knocking off the Nebraska duo of Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim 9-7. The Cornhusker pair was the second-seeded team in the consolation draw, while Siow and Spindler had already defeated the draw's top seed, the Maryland pair of John Collins and Maros Horny, Friday.
Two of the three pairs that Siow and Spindler beat were ranked highly in the ITA preseason poll. The Maryland duo was ranked No. 9, and the Nebraska pair No. 13. Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola, the Ohio State pair that defeated Siow and Spindler 8-5 in the first round of the main draw, was ranked No. 3 in that poll
At Cornell, Dan Davies and Ben Quazzo finished their play in the Big Red's Fall Invitational Saturday. Davies advanced to the "A" semifinal with a win over Quoc-Daniel Nguyen, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, before falling to Damien David of Buffalo, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Quazzo won a consolation match over Spencer Clark of Cornell, 6-3, 6-4, and another over Alex Kalinin of Buffalo, 7-6, 6-2. In doubles play, Davies and Quazzo won a consolation match over Aram Abgaryan and Mehdi Mekaoui of Duquesne, 9-7.
