16th-Ranked Rutgers Wrestles Past Princeton For 29-7 Victory
December 10, 2011 | Wrestling
When the Princeton wrestling team upset Old Dominion last weekend, it used a strong run by its lightweights to build a lead that never went away. Looking for its first win over a Top-25 team in more than a decade, the Tigers came into Dillon Gym Saturday afternoon with the exact same game plan.
The 16th-ranked Scarlet Knights had another idea, and they were simply too tough to let Princeton get out to a big edge. Rutgers won eight of 10 matches to improve to 4-1 on the season with a 29-7 victory over Princeton (1-4).
The Tigers were able to get out to an early lead, as junior co-captain Garrett Frey edged Vincent Dellafave 3-2 to give Princeton a 3-0 advantage. Freshman Chris Perez has been dependable at 133 for Princeton this season, but Rutgers senior Michael DeMarco earned his 10th win of the season with a hard-fought 4-2 victory over over Perez.
Sophomore Adam Krop faced a pressure-packed spot against Rutgers senior Billy Ashnault, and he nearly pulled out the win. The experienced Rutgers senior had enough to clinch the 5-3 win, which gave the Scarlet Knights a huge 6-3 edge moving into some of its top competitors.
Third-ranked Mario Mason had his way at 149, scoring a technical fall over junior Zach Bintliff to open an 11-3 Rutgers lead. Tiger senior Daniel Kolodzik, coming off a Top-15 win last weekend, got Princeton back into the match with a major decision. It was Kolodzik's 11th win of the season in 14 tries and is another important victory as he seeks his first NCAA Championship invitation.
A pair of Top-15 wrestlers took control right back for Rutgers. Sixth-ranked Scott Winston topped Rich Eva 18-5 at 165, and No. 14 Gregory Zannetti scored an 8-3 decision over senior Andy Lowy. Rutgers closed it out with a Daniel Sweep, starting with a 4-0 win over Daniel Seidenberg at 184.
Rutgers added a 12-2 win for Daniel Rinaldi (197) and a 12-3 win over Daniel Hopkins (HWT) to clinch the 29-7 victory.
Princeton will head to Lewisburg, Pa., next weekend to take on both Central Michigan and Bucknell. The Tigers scored an 18-16 upset win over the Bison last year.
