Both Swim/Dive Programs Ranked Among Top 5 In Mid-Major National Rankings
December 15, 2011 | Men's Swimming and Diving
Both the Princeton men's and women's swimming teams have moved into the Top 5 in the latest CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Division I Rankings.
The Princeton men, who stand at 3-0 on the season and won the 2011 Big Al Open, are ranked first nationally with 251.35 points. That ranking will be tested twice when the Tigers return from the holiday break, starting with a Jan. 7 road meet at Navy. The Midshipmen, ranked third nationally with 242.13 points, own the last dual victory over Princeton and ended the Tigers' 20-year win streak at DeNunzio Pool last winter.
Four weeks later, Princeton will meet Ivy rival Harvard during the annual H-Y-P meet in Boston (Feb. 3-4). Harvard defeated Princeton in the dual meet last season, but the Tigers bounced back with a historic 5.5-point victory over the Crimson in the closest Ivy League Championship meet in history.
Ivy League opponents Columbia (14) and Dartmouth (20) are also ranked, and Princeton will face both teams after the holiday break.
The Princeton women went from unranked to No. 4 in the nation after an impressive showing at the Big Al Open. The Tigers, who are also 3-0 on the season, have 250.16 points in the poll, less than seven points out of first place.
One of the three teams ahead of Princeton is Harvard, which is ranked second with 253.83 points. The Tigers will see Harvard twice this season, and both will be in Blodgett Pool in Cambridge, Mass. The H-Y-P meet will be held Feb. 4-5, and the Ivy League Championships will be held Feb. 23-25. Princeton is both the two-time defending Ivy League champion and has won 10 of the last 12 titles.
Columbia (21) is also ranked nationally; the Lions will be Princeton's final home opponent this season. The Tigers will host Columbia Feb. 10 for their annual Senior Day.
