Princeton Finishes Ultra-Successful 2011 At Drexel

Before the ball drops in Times Square, it goes up in college basketball games around the country, as a growing trend of playing on New Year's Eve continues.
A few years ago, playing on New Year's Eve was unheard of in college basketball. On the final day of 2011? There will be 79 Division I men's games and 64 Division I women's games.
One of each will be played at Drexel, where the Princeton women finish an incredibly successful calendar year by playing the Dragons in the second game of a doubleheader that begins at noon with Drexel's men against St. Francis (Pa.).
This will mark Princeton's third-ever game on Dec. 31.
Before last year, the only time Princeton ever played on New Year's Eve was in 2000, when the Tigers lost at Providence.
Midnight last New Year's Eve came as the Princeton bus rolled along a highway in Pennsylvania, after the Tigers had defeated Wake Forest in Winston-Salem.

Princeton plays its 30th and final game of the calendar year 2011.
The Tigers have gone 23-6 so far in 2011, including a 13-1 run in the Ivy League that resulted in a second-straight conference championship. Princeton played in the 2011 NCAA tournament.

Princeton has had two players reach 1,000 points in the calendar year 2011, and a third has a great chance of joining that group before midnight. Or halftime, for that matter.
Addie Micir, the 2011 Ivy League Player of the Year who graduated last spring, went over the 1,000-point mark in Princeton's first game of 2011, a win over La Salle.
Lauren Edwards went over the 1,000-point mark in Princeton's second game of the current season, when she did so against Lafayette.
Devona Allgood enters the Drexel game with 997 points, leaving her three away from the milestone.
Princeton could have another 1,000-point scorer this season - but not this year - if Niveen Rasheed can score another 132 in Princeton's remaining 16 regular-season games. That would require Rasheed to average 8.8 points per game, or a little more than half of her 17.2 points per game average. Princeton has never had three players reach 1,000 points in the same season.
Rasheed would also have reached 1,000 points in 2011 if she'd continued to average the 16.4 points per game she was averaging a year ago, when she tore her ACL in the 12th game of the season. Instead, she missed 17 games, which at 16.4 points per game would have been an additional 279 points.

Princeton's win over Hofstra Thursday afternoon was its closest game of the season, regardless of who won.
Of Princeton's first 12 games, eleven were decided by double figures and the other was decided by nine.
Against Hofstra, Princeton won by five points.
The Hofstra game was also the first time this season that Princeton has won a game while allowing more than 62 points. The final was 74-69.

Princeton and Drexel meet for the eighth time, and Princeton holds a 6-1 lead in the series.
The teams met twice in the 1980s and twice in the 1990s and then didn't play again until the last two years. Princeton won 66-49 at Drexel in 2009 and then 64-52 at home last December.
Drexel held Niveen Rasheed to four points - all from the foul line - in that game. Lauren Edwards had 17 and Devona Allgood had 12 in the game.

Princeton is playing the first of two straight games in Philadelphia.
The Drexel game is the final non-league game for Princeton. Of Princeton's 14 non-league opponents, only one (Lafayette) currently has a losing record.
Princeton will be off until Saturday, Jan. 7, when the Tigers open the Ivy League season at Penn.
Since the start of the double round-robin format in the 1982-83 season, no team has ever won three straight outright Ivy League women's basketball championships. Princeton has won the last two, going 27-1 in that time.

The win over Hofstra was Courtney Banghart's 80th as Princeton head coach; now in her fifth season, she is already second all-time in wins at Princeton in women's basketball.
Joan Kowalik won 163 games (losing 131) in 11 seasons at Princeton.
