Track & Field Sweeps HYP; Women Win 10

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (2/12/11) - The Princeton women's track & field team won its second straight HYP meet and the fourth in five years. The Tigers earned 90.5 points to take the title, with Harvard second with 41.5 and Yale third with 27.
Princeton won 10 of the 15 events, including: the 60, 200, 800, 3000, hurdles, pole vault, triple jump, long jump, shot put and weight throw.
Junior Eileen Moran was a double winner with victories in the 60 and 200. She ran the 60 in 7.70 and the 200 at 25.17. Sophomore Erin Guty was the runner up in both events, with a time of 7.74 in the 60 and 25.25 in the 200. Guty earned a victory over her own later in the day, in the long jump, reaching 5.61 meters while freshman Lily Miller was second with a jump of 5.52.
Sophomore Melissa Zajdel won the 800 in a time of 2:11.50, beating out Yale's Annalies Gamble by 0.35 seconds. Freshman Kristin Smoot was third at 2:12.94.
Junior Alex Banfich won the 3000 at 9:30.90, beating out Harvard's Claire Richardson by over nine seconds.
Seniors Lauren Barber and Bianca Mathabane went 1-2 in the hurdles as the only two to clock in under nine seconds. Barber won with a time of 8.83 and Mathabane ran an 8.91.
The 4x400 and 4x800 relays would both finish in second place. The 4x400 of Blocker, Moran, Glaeser and Joie Hand ran 3:47.35 to Harvard's winning time of 3:46.10. Smoot, Zajdel, Mikaelian and Molly Higgins posted a time of 8:51.70 in the 4x400 behind Yale's 8:49.68.
Princeton would earn three points with third and fourth-place finishes in both the 400 and mile. Junior Danielle Glaeser and freshman Jasmine Blocker took third and fourth in the 400 with time of 57.17 and 57.69, respectively. In the mile senior Ashley Higginson and sophomore Alexis Mikaelian ran 4:45.25 and 4:48.46, respectively.
Princeton went 1-2-3-4 in the pole vault, earning 10.5 of a possible 11 points in the event. Sophomore Tory Worthen was the victor clearing 3.75 meters. Freshman Samantha Anderson and sophomore Lauren Tauscher would also clear 3.75 to tie for second place. Junior Lydia Arias reached 3.45 meters to finish in a fourth-place tie.
Freshman Imani Oliver won her team five points but taking first in the triple jump. Oliver leaped to 11.74 meters, while Barber would reach 11.50 to finish third.
Freshman Theresa Kennedy was the runner up in the high jump. She along with Harvard's Mary Hirst and Yale's Emily Standish all cleared 1.60 meters.
Seniors Thanithia Billings and Emma Ruggiero would bring the Tigers wins in both the shot put and the weight throw.
Billings won the shot put with a throw of 14.84 meters and would place second in the weight throw at 16.19 meters. Ruggiero threw to 17.35 in the weight to win the event. The pair were the only two throwers to toss the weight further than 16 meters.
The Tigers host the Princeton Invitational next Saturday, Feb. 19. The first event is slated for 11 a.m.
