Tennis Teams Head West, South for Weekend
February 03, 2011 | Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis
Princeton's tennis teams will each have a pair of dual matches this weekend as the indoor season continues.
The men's team (1-0), coming off its 4-3 victory over then-No. 71 Penn State last weekend, will head to the Chicago area for a Saturday match against Northwestern at 6 p.m. ET and a Sunday match against DePaul at 10 a.m. ET. The Tigers entered the ITA rankings this week, checking in at No. 73, while Northwestern is at No. 60 in the latest ITA poll released Feb. 3, while DePaul is unranked.
Northwestern stands 3-0 heading into a Friday match against Middle Tennessee State, while DePaul is 4-1 with a Saturday match against Iowa. The Tigers fell 5-2 to Northwestern in Jadwin Gym last year in the second-ever meeting after a win in 1986. Princeton and DePaul have never met.
The women's team (1-2) will head to Nashville, Tenn., for a Saturday match against Memphis at 5:30 ET and a Sunday match against Vanderbilt at 1 p.m. ET. Vanderbilt is ranked No. 20 and Princeton is at No. 37 in the latest ITA poll. The Tigers were swept by Florida State and Texas, both top-20 teams, at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend last week in Florida.
Vanderbilt is 2-1 and will face Yale Saturday boasting five ITA-ranked singles players and four ranked doubles teams. The Tigers defeated Vanderbilt 4-3 a year ago in Jadwin Gym after losing to the Commodores in Tennessee in 2009. Memphis is 3-2 and has never faced Princeton.
The matches are the last for the women before Princeton hosts the ECAC Championship Feb. 18-20, and the next-to-last for the men before they head to the ECACs at Harvard the same weekend. Princeton's men will host Fairleigh Dickinson next Saturday in Jadwin Gym.
