Top-Ranked Harvard Defeats Tiger Women's Squash 7-2 At Jadwin
February 07, 2011 | Women's Squash
Despite several close games up and down the ladder, the Harvard women's squash team lived up to its No. 1 ranking with a 7-2 victory over No. 5 Princeton Sunday afternoon at the Jadwin Squash Courts. The Tigers got wins from both a senior and a freshman against the reigning Ivy League champion.
Princeton trailed 2-1 after the first shift, with freshman Libby Eyre winning a wild five-game match at the No. 3 spot over Alisha Mashruwala. Eyre trailed after one game, but came back with wins of 11-7 and 11-8. Mashruwala evened the match with an 11-8 win, but Eyre put forth a winning final effort to take the match 11-7.
Though Harvard would win at No. 6 and No. 9, both Princeton players would be in the contest. Senior Nikki Sequeira lost 11-8, 11-6 and 11-6 at the No. 6 spot, while junior Daphne Rein-Weston dropped a trio of close 11-8 games.
The Crimson got within one win of the team victory in the second shift with wins at No. 5 and No. 8, but Princeton senior Jackie Moss continued her impressive senior season with an 11-4, 11-8, 11-9 win over Harvard's Nirasha Gurgue. Moss is 11-0 on the season and will look to complete a perfect regular season next weekend at both Mt. Holyoke and No. 3 Trinity.
Harvard finished the match by sweeping the third shift, although the wins at both No. 1 and No. 4 would go at least four games. At the top spot, Princeton sophomore Julie Cerullo was even at 1-1 with reigning national champion Laura Gemmell of Harvard before losing two close games. Freshman Lexi Saunders had an even closer match, winning 11-9 in both the first and fourth games before losing 11-7 in the fifth.
While this was the regular season home finale for the Tiger women, Princeton is still assured to play three more matches at Jadwin, and it would love nothing more than to get one more shot at the Crimson. Princeton will host the 2011 Howe Cup national championships in two weeks.
