Micir Earns Princeton's First Player of the Year Honor
March 10, 2011 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. (3/10/11) - Addie Micir is the unanimous selection as the 2011 Ivy League Women's Basketball Player of the Year and Lauren Polansky earned Defensive Player of the Year, it was announced on Thursday, March 10 by the league office when it revealed the Ivy League women's basketball All-Ivy teams.
This is Princeton's first Player of the Year honor in program history and is the league's first unanimous Player of the Year selection since Harvard's Hana Peljto in 2003.
Micir is the Tigers' captain guiding her team to a 24-4 overall record and a 13-1 Ivy League mark to win their second straight Ivy League championship and NCAA bid. A four-year starter she is a member of the 1,000 point club and is one of the program's best three-point and free-throw shooters. She led the league in three's made and assist/turnover ratio, finished third in assists, sixth in field goal percentage and ninth in scoring. Princeton's leading scorer, Micir earned two Ivy League Player of the Week honors this year and was a second-team All-Ivy selection in 2009 and 2010.
"I'm so proud of and happy for co-captain Addie Micir," head coach Courtney Banghart said. "What she has meant to this program in her time wearing the Orange and Black makes her most deserving of the very prestigous Player of the Year award. Addie has never cared about her own personal statistics or accolades, she's only cared about winning. That is what the Player of the Year does and she was absolutely key to our title run this year, in all facets of the game. The Princeton program would like to sincerely thank the league coaches for this honor."
Polansky is just the second player in the Ivy League to earn Defensive Player of the Year as the award originated in 2009, with Yale's Sara Yee earning it twice.
The starting point guard, Polansky gives her opponents fits with her relentless 94' of pressure to disrupt the offense from the get-go. She finished sixth in the league in steals with 52 and seventh in assists with 80. Polansky has led the team in assists 13 times this season and steals 10 times. In addition she is fourth on the team in both rebounds and blocks.
Princeton led the way with three first-team All-Ivy selections, including two unanimous picks in Micir and junior post Devona Allgood. Junior Lauren Edwards rounds out the first-team Tiger trio. This is the first time in history Princeton has had three first-team players in a single season.
"At Princeton we strive to be a true team in every sense of the word, where we rely on the contribution of everyone to win," Banghart said. "But we certainly appreciate the well deserved honors for all four players selected. Great teams require great efforts from great players. It's a proud day to be a Tiger."
For the second straight season Allgood led the league in field goal percentage, hitting 53.8 percent of her shots. Allgood is also the league's leading rebounder with 7.3 boards per game, while ranking third in blocks with 1.46 per game, and ninth in scoring with 12 points per game. She was in double digits in scoring in 21 games and had five double-doubles getting three in her last three games. She was a three-time Player of the Week this year. Allgood was a second-team selection last year, a year after she was named to the All-Rookie team.
This is the second consecutive season that Edwards has earned first-team honors. She started all 28 games and averaged 11.7 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. She has scored in double digits 17 times and was named the Player of the Week once this year. Edwards ranks third in the league in three-point field goal percentage, fifth in field goal percentage, 11th in the league in scoring and 17th in rebounds.
