Trio of Opponents Ahead for Softball in Virginia
March 11, 2011 | Softball
In just its second weekend of the new season, the Princeton softball team will begin its spring break week at a Virginia-hosted tournament Saturday through Monday.
Princeton (1-2) opened its season last weekend at a Maryland-Baltimore County tournament where they defeated Iona and fell to Siena and Liberty.
Freshman Tory Roberts and Nikki Chu were both 3 for 9 at the plate last weekend to lead the team with a .333 batting average, while a trio of pitchers, including senior Michelle Tolfa and sophomores Liza Kuhn and Alex Peyton, handled the innings in the circle.
Princeton will open the weekend against Virginia with a 9 a.m. game Saturday. The teams have faced three times with the Tigers holding a 2-1 edge, winning in 1984 and 1994 before losing in 1998. The Cavaliers are 12-9 this season and have been playing since Feb. 11.
The Tigers will face Fordham twice, at 2 p.m. Saturday and again at 3 p.m. Sunday. The games will be the second and third all-time between the two schools with Princeton winning the only other meeting in 1993. The Rams (9-10) have also been on the field for a month, playing their first game on Feb. 12.
Princeton will face Syracuse at 2 p.m. Sunday and in the tournament finale at noon Monday. The Orange, which played its first game on Feb. 12, carries a 16-3 record into the tournament, a record that includes a 3-2 win over No. 10/11 Hawai'i on Feb. 25. Syracuse is ranked No. 25 in the latest NFCA while receiving the second-most votes of unranked teams in the ESPN.com/USA softball poll. These will be the first meetings between Princeton and Syracuse in softball.
The Tigers will stay in the Mid-Atlantic for the remainder of spring break with midweek games at Georgetown and George Washington before a tournament next weekend at Maryland.
